The quality of precision fasteners stems from extreme control over detailed manufacturing processes. For the customer’s custom 5/16 304 stainless steel internal Torx small bolt, we overcame technical challenges in hot forging of small-size fasteners. With custom mold design and refined forging workflow, we successfully completed sample development and testing, laying a solid foundation for subsequent automated mass production.
This custom part adopts premium 304 stainless steel material, featuring excellent corrosion resistance, toughness and structural stability to suit precision assembly across multiple application scenarios. With a diameter of only 5/16, this bolt falls into the micro fastener category. Conventional cold heading cannot satisfy the customer’s specified hot forging forming requirements. Hot forging of small-size profiles tends to cause deformation, uneven surface texture and inner hole tolerance deviation, bringing extremely high difficulties to process control.
To precisely deliver the custom requirement and resolve pain points of hot forging for tiny workpieces, we developed two sets of dedicated forming dies and built an exclusive refined forging workflow, balancing product precision, structural stability and forming consistency. During trial production, we abandoned conventional forming methods and adopted multi-step precision forming operations.
First, material diameter reduction is applied to accurately downsize raw bars. Tight dimensional tolerances are enforced to machine raw material to standard forming size, ensuring baseline precision for subsequent forging.
After raw material pretreatment, localized precision heating technology is deployed to strictly regulate heating temperature and heating zone. It prevents overall thermal deformation of miniature workpieces and preserves the material’s mechanical properties. Based on precise temperature control, forging is carried out in separate stages: standard hex bolt head is upset and formed first to guarantee regular head geometry and assembly compatibility. The internal Torx cavity is then precisely forged to achieve well-shaped profiles and accurate engagement, perfectly matching downstream assembly requirements.
At present, this 304 stainless steel internal Torx small bolt has passed sample testing. Inspection results confirm accurate dimensions, sound forming and stable structure. All technical parameters meet specifications and fully satisfy the customer’s custom standards.
The successful implementation of this small-size hot forging process demonstrates our process expertise and technological breakthrough capability in custom non-standard and micro fastener manufacturing.
